"I guess the most epic romances are still tucked away within the pages of her favorite novels, safely swathed in inked lies and faded paper promises. Forever fictional. Just like love."I am a sucker for a good love story and Ink and Lies by S.L. Jennings was on my list of recommendations based on some of my recent purchases. I had never read anything by this author before but the book's description sounded fairly interesting so I purchased it and dove right in. I wasn't expecting the beautiful love story that I found within these pages and, even though I was surprised by a few things about the story, I really enjoyed it.
"She smiles at complete strangers and laughs at nothing. Animals and babies make her teary-eyed, and she is fiercely in love with all things love. She isn't just sunshine on a rainy day; she is refuge in a hurricane. And she's my best friend."
August Rhys Calloway (also known as Rhys to his best friend) is a romance writer in Spokane, Washington who writes bestselling romance books under the pen name of Hope Hughes. He met his best friend Fiona (Fi) Shaw in college and was immediately attracted to her bookish nature. From then on, the two are inseparable. They do everything together, like most best friends, and it would seem like they are meant for each other. However, they never have moved into a romantic relationship even though August clearly has feelings for her but he is afraid of commitment. He doesn't want to lose his best friend. All of the sudden, life gets very real for August and he and Fiona have to decide if they can remain friends forever or if there is something more to their relationship.
"I only know of one person that believes in books as much as I do. And she'll always be my magic."
I really enjoyed this contemporary romance about longtime friends who aren't sure if they can have a romantic relationship after being friends for so long. I'll admit that I was very surprised that the narrator for most of the book is August so it took me a little while to adjust to reading a book written from a male's perspective. Most of the books I read are written from a female's point-of-view so it was definitely different. This is not to discourage anyone interested in reading this book. I liked this book a lot but I just had to adjust to a male POV. Right around 80%, according to my Kindle, the narrators switch back and forth between August and Fiona so we get to be inside Fiona's head for a little while too. Overall, I think this book held my attention and tugged at my heartstrings so much that I teared up! If you enjoy friends to lovers romances, you will most likely enjoy this book. I'd definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a good, emotional romantic novel!

Ink Lies SL Jennings 9781523840083 Books Reviews
I am going to leave an intentionally short review for Ink and Lies. The story has so much that the layers that unfolded within its pages can't be summed up in a few simple words. This story has to be read. The story has to be felt. This story has to be experienced!
S.L. Jennings wrote one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. But Ink and Lies was so much more than a romantically humorous tale with a patented happily ever after. After a laugh out loud (seriously, there are some HILARIOUS moments in this story!) first half, the deeper and more emotional elements begin to emerge. And boy do they ever emerge! Ink and Lies left me on the edge of my seat with its highs and lows. It was artistically beautiful and sweet, but heartbreaking at the same time. This story is a friends to lovers story unlike any other that you will ever read. I didn't know if I was going or coming toward the end, especially when Jennings blended truth and fiction together so seamlessly that it left me breathless. Ink and Lies left me floored by its eloquent beauty.
This one is difficult to write. I wanted to love the story... but I really only kinda, sorta, liked it. May contain some spoilers.
I love that it was told from August's point of view. I don't think there's enough of that and I appreciate how well the author managed it here. It can be difficult for us (as women) to speak for a man. But the author did it flawlessly. And I really just loved him altogether. His wit, his attitude, is personality. I connected to him in a way that made me want to go to that coffee shop and have a coffee with him.
Fiona was a bit of a pickle. I wanted to love her. And while I liked her when she was with August, I hated her when she was with her boyfriend. She came across as weak and meek and I can't stand a heroine that does that. I realize that may have been what the author was going for, but for me, it just set my teeth on edge.
I love a story that gives you that sexual tension and builds up to the romance. But this one seemed to take forever and it really had me wanting to skip pages (I didn't, but it was very difficult not to) just to get to the part where our H and h would finally come together. The ending wasn't bad... I just wish that August and Fiona could have happened sooner in the book and that we could have read more about them together.
Would I recommend? Yes
Will I read it again? Eh... depends on my mood. But I won't hold my breath.
